Chess is a strategic board game played between two players. The objective is to checkmate the opponent's king, which means the king is in a position to be captured (in "check") and there is no way to move the king out of capture (mate).

A chessboard consists of 64 squares, arranged in an 8x8 grid. The board should be positioned so that each player has a white (or light) square on their right-hand side. The pieces are set up as follows: First row (from left to right): Rook, Knight, Bishop, Queen, King, Bishop, Knight, Rook Second row: All pawns White pieces occupy the first two rows, and black pieces occupy the last two rows.

Each type of piece has its own unique movement: Pawns: Move forward one square but capture diagonally. On their first move, they can move forward two squares. Bishops: Move diagonally any number of squares. Queens: Move vertically, horizontally, or diagonally any number of squares. Kings: Move one square in any direction.

Some basic strategies include controlling the center of the board, developing your pieces (moving them off the back rank) early, and protecting your king by castling.
